Great breakthroughs! Stem cell(PRP) may cure for chronic spinal cord injury
Four patients with chronic spinal cord injury, lower lumbar movement, and complete loss of sensory function have received human neural stem cell transplantation. This is a pioneering clinical trial and also the first human clinical trial to use neural stem cells to treat chronic spinal cord injury. In June 1st, a report published in” Cell Stem Cell” recorded the treatment course and clinical follow-up of the 4 patients. The results showed that the whole course of treatment did not show any signs of adverse reactions, and there was a relative improvement in patients after treatment.
Severe spinal cord injury may cause devastating consequences, like paralyzing the injured area, and the hope of recovery is very slim. Until now no therapy has been used to promote nerve repair in these patients, but animal studies have shown that the transplantation of human neural stem cells to the site of injury can promote the recovery of downstream muscle tissue.
This clinical study is related to human neural stem cell line NSI-566. In fact, the neural stem cell line NSI-566 has been approved by FDA for human patients. In a previous study, the research team at the University of California San Diego showed that these cells could improve the motor and sensory neuron function of the rat model of spinal cord injury. Their new research shows that these cells can survive for a long time in mice and produce lots of new nerve terminals. In addition, their studies on pigs showed that these cells did not cause any adverse effects. Based on these preclinical studies, the team decided to conduct small trials in the human body.
The clinical study have 4 patients aged between 24 and 35 (1 women and 3 men patients) who suffered thoracic and lumbar injuries due to a motor vehicle accident. so that the movements and sensory functions below the injured part of these patients were completely lost and had no chance to recovery automatically.
In the entire trial, 4 patients received 6 intraspinal stem cell injections, with a dose of 200000 cells / times, and regular exercise and sensory evaluation after the operation. It was found that 3 patients had slight improvement in sensation and muscle movement after treatment. Compared with before treatment, the patient have some conscious or able to move the injured part of the muscle.
In the past, no human clinical trials have proved that such stem cells can be used for the treatment of chronic spinal cord injury. This clinical trial is an important breakthrough. Neuroscientists from the center for neurological rehabilitation at University of California, San Diego, told the media that the treatment were safe, which can be judged by the test results. More research should be carried out in the future to verify the effectiveness of this therapy.
PRP(Platelet Rich Plasma) is prepared through blood centrifugation to obtain high concentration Platelet Plasma. Sanli@ PRP can effectively prevents platelet loss and accelerate platelets to produce growth factors. These growth factors form platelets participate in the migration, differentiation and proliferation of stem cells, as well as to stimulate cells such as fibroblasts and endothelial cells. PRP is widely used in cosmetics, orthopedics, stomatology and other fields. For more information of PRP, please go to https://www.sanlimedical.com.
